Economic Growth and Job Creation

Being a job creator herself, Hillary knows all too well the hurdles local businesses face just trying to open its doors. She started her business in 2008, just as we were entering the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, so she understands the need to clear away the red tape and bureaucracy that hinder job creation. Hillary’s clear understanding of the financial crisis led to the realization that you must think outside the box to persevere in troubled times – whether you’re running a business or a City.

And Hillary’s creative approach to the economy has paid off. She opened her first business and expanded it – then went on the launch a second successful venture - when all the odds were stacked against her. This is the kind of dedication Hillary will bring with her to the Reno City council. And it’s why she was named Entrepreneur of the Year in 2011 by the Gazette-Journal Nevada leads the country in one of the highest rates of unemployment and foreclosure rates in the country. We must be receptive and welcome entrepreneurs with open arms. Small businesses are vital because they bring the lion’s share of jobs to our city. Hillary believes we must entice businesses to open and help retain current business in our city.

Hillary will deploy outside-the-box job creation tactics like allowing vacant commercial properties to house entrepreneurial startups to make it affordable for new businesses. Hillary will spearhead a campaign she calls “Start it up in Reno” a showcase for all the attributes Reno has to offer businesses and companies that want to relocate.

Public Safety

Public safety must not take a backseat when it comes to enhancing our city and the safety of our citizens. Allowing citizens to be safe in our homes and on the streets is the MOST important function a government can serve. Hillary will provide our first responders with all the tools they need to keep us safe. Moreover, lower crime rates are a key selling point in attracting economic assets and growth. Law enforcement is a vital component in a community's economic development plan. Businesses will consider new locations based on public safety first and foremost. Having. A superior police force and community safety programs will attract new businesses and enhance our tax base, which will further enhance policing operations

Education

Hillary knows we are at a critical point in education. A thriving education system is essential for attracting new companies to Reno. We must strive for excellence, not just shoot for the average, and no longer will it be sufficient for a small percentage of children to be prepared for success in college.

This change in expectations demands innovative new approaches such as technology based charter schools and “student to student” programs like “Teach for America” but on a much more local level.

Our education system in Nevada must meet a higher standard, one that shall not fail our children. This will involve a whole host of tactics, including strategic partnerships with local government and increased intergovernmental communication.

Senior Services

Services for our mature residents and maintaining the quality of life for the elderly are very important to Hillary. Since being the main caretaker for her 65-year-old ill mother after an unexpected brain aneurysm 12 years ago, Hillary has become an expert on services for the aging. This experience will allow her to bring the highest level of empathy to City Hall. We must never forget the people who built this community throughout their years. Now it’s our turn to give back to them and Hillary will fight for enhanced services for our mature population - from hospitals to transportation, living facilities to community programs.
